About The Series
The original intention of this series was to make a cross country journey, much like several of my favorite artists had done in the past. I envisioned myself working in the new topographic style influenced by Stephen Shore or Joel Sternfeld and returning with day and night landscapes chronicling America coast to coast. So I set out with my large format camera ready to capture the country. As the trip went on I found I was drawn more to the details than the vistas, eventually focusing in on smaller and smaller points. My trip was guided by a Garmin GPS navigation device. The devise contains maps of the entire country as well as millions of 'points of interest' including sites to see, hotels, gas stations, stores and a plethora of other destinations for a traveler. As I focused in on just slices of these destinations they became abstracted from any sense of place. It took looking very closely to find the unique character of the landscapes I came across.
